The Media and Communication Studies Students' Council
The Media and Communication Studies Students’ Council (MACSSC) mission is to foster a connected, and dynamic community within our faculty. MACSSC serves as a bridge between students and faculty, amplifying student voices, advocating for their academic and social needs, and ensuring open, effective communication across all levels. Through meaningful initiatives, creative programming, and engaging events, we strive to enrich the student experience, promote collaboration, and empower every student to thrive both personally and professionally.
What is FIMS & MACS?
The Faculty of Information and Media Studies (FIMS) is the faculty in which students will be a part of as MACS students. FIMS encompasses all undergraduate and graduate programs. Media and Communications Studies (MACS) is the first year program students enroll into in their first year. During the Intent to Register (ITR) period towards the end of their first year, students will apply to continue in the MIT module, and may also choose to co-enroll in the CAP module or the Certificate in Digital Communication.
MACS at Western is a media studies program that aims to offer critical, interdisciplinary analysis of the institutions, practices, and cultural meanings associated with technologies of communication, information, knowledge, learning, and entertainment. This program offers students an opportunity to combine theory and critical thinking with practical skills that are applicable to the media industry. This includes but is not limited to experience with journalism, public relations, marketing, graphic design, and website design. Graduates of Media & Communication Studies go on to work in diverse fields using the tangible skills that they gain from the program.
